Take a ramble with the Romans

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 21:39, Sunday October 17th, 2010.

A new programme of walks has been developed which promises to offer ramblers and history buffs the chance to take in the stunning countryside around Gelligaer while learning about the area’s rich Roman history.

Caerphilly county borough council’s Countryside Services and the Roman Fort Working Group have developed a series of free walks giving local people an exciting opportunity to explore the rich heritage of Gelligaer and its surrounds, led by qualified guides… and better still, the walks are free.

The walks focus on the remains of the Gelligaer Roman Fort, a cornerstone of the Roman military network that controlled south-east Wales for over 40 years. They will also take in the wider countryside and farmland of the Caerphilly county borough including sites of the old Roman practice grounds on Gelligaer Common. This history of the area will be brought to life through the interpretive skill of professional guides.

The walks will take place on the following dates and all start at 2pm.

  • Saturday October 23
  • Sunday October 31
  • Saturday November 13
  • Sunday November 21
  • Saturday November 27

Stout footwear is required and the walk is classed as easy/moderate with some walking on soft/uneven ground

All tours depart from St Catwg’s Church (main gate) and will last one to one-and-a-half hours, including a complimentary refreshment stop along the way.

This project has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007 – 2013 which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
