A new environmental and historical society with roots from around Risca launches at the Crosskeys Rugby Club, Pandy Park, Crosskeys tonight.
The society, called Cymdeithas Twmbarlwm or The Twmbarlwm Society (CTS), seeks to protect
the scheduled ancient monument on the summit of Twmbarlwm, and its immediate environment, from the damage being caused by erosion and antisocial activities.
This first evening seeks to celebrate and explore the unique history and archaeology of Twmbarlwm and the Mynydd Maen/Mynydd Henllys ridge, through presentations by prominent local historians and archaeologists.
The evening will also feature a panel discussion about current historical theories on the mountain, and an audience led question and answer session. Participators include Dr Ray Howell, Reader in History and Historical Archaeology at University of Wales, Newport, Dr Madeleine Gray, Reader in History, University of Wales, Newport, Neil Philips, Archaeological Consultant with A.P.A.C Ltd and Richard Davies, Project Officer with the Ancient Cwmbran and The Cistercians Project.
The society also plans to arrange further activities over the coming months to promote and celebrate the historical, archaeological, literary and artistic merits of the mountain and its locality.
Doors open at 7pm and the evening commences promptly at 7.30pm. Tthe evening is free for the public to attend and there will also be an opportunity to join the society at the end of the evening.
