Volunteers needed for new Macmillan cancer support service

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Monday January 16th, 2012.

Volunteers are being sought to help run a new cancer support service in Caerphilly County Borough from charity Macmillan.

A core group of volunteers has already signed up to help people affected by cancer with practical tasks such as shopping, dog walking, cleaning and laundry, but Macmillan Cancer Support is looking to recruit more.

Macmillan Cancer Support is setting up the service in partnership with local charity CancerCareLine.

An open day is being held on January 19 to give people interested in volunteering the chance to meet Macmillan staff and find out more about the scheme.

Debra Spencer, from Caerphilly, signed up to become a practical support volunteer after attending a recent open day.

She said: “It’s just giving back. It’s just helping someone who needs a bit of help. When you’re feeling ill, you need a little bit of sunshine and that’s what we’re going to be.”

The information day will be held in Caerphilly Tourist Information Office, The Twyn, on Thursday, January 19 between 10am and 5pm.

Potential volunteers are welcome to drop in throughout the day, have a cup of tea or coffee and chat to staff about volunteer opportunities.

To find out more, or if you would like to get involved but are not able to attend the event, contact Macmillan Cancer Support on 01656 867960 or email cwalters@macmillan.org
