Clive Pike is walking to Cardiff to raise money for Velindre Hospital

A husband is aiming to raise £2,000 for Velindre Hospital as his wife battles cancer for the second time.

Rowena Pike, 48, from Penyrheol, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. After successfully beating it, the disease has come back beneath her chest wall. Inspired by her fight and determination, husband Clive is to walk the seven-and-a-half miles from Caerphilly town to Cardiff on March 3.

Clive, 47, will be joined by around 40 friends on the trek as he aims to raise £2,000 for Velindre Hospital. He will be leaving Caerphilly bandstand at 10am.

He said: “The hospital is so great. Everyone associated with the hospital down there is wonderful.

“They get paid, of course, but they don’t get paid to have a smile on their face and that can make a world of difference.

“A lot of my friends had thought about doing something and when they found out I was doing this they asked if they could join. A lot of people are doing it in memory of others who have been lost to cancer.”

Helping feed the army of fundraisers, who will be collecting with buckets on the way, are Peter’s Pies, based in Bedwas, and water company Brecon Carreg who have donated supplies for the walk.

Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar has also offered free hot drinks to walkers before their descent into Cardiff.

To help with the fundraising, a facepainter will be on-hand at the band stand in Castle Court Shopping Centre between 12pm and 2pm on the day.
