Staff from cancer support charity Macmillan had a busy day on Thursday signing up volunteers for a new scheme.
The charity is working alongside Blackwood-based CancerCareLine to help those affected by cancer with practical tasks such as shopping, dog walking, cleaning and laundry.
Volunteer advisor Rachel Biggs and involvement co-ordinator Caroline Walters ran a Q&A workshop at Caerphilly Visitor Centre for those interested in volunteering for the new borough-wide scheme.
Caroline said: “People fighting cancer have told us that although the medical side is fantastic, quite often it’s when they’re back home after treatment they need the extra help and it’s not always available.
“It is the everyday tasks such as shopping or even taking the dog for a walk.”
Rachel added: “CancerCareLine told us about this and it’s something that’s really needed in the area. The support scheme will make such a difference to people living with cancer.”
A-Level student Anastasia Loxley, 18, has already signed up to help with the scheme prior to its official launch later this year.
The St Cenydd School pupil has been busy promoting it around town. She said: “It’s a great cause and a great way to help people and it doesn’t take up that much of your time.”
While there were volunteers signing up during Thursday’s open day, the charity still needs as many volunteers as possible to make the scheme a success.
