Caerphilly’s Contemporary Young Musicians of the Year 2012 named

More than 120 guitarists, drummers, bassists and singers battled it out recently during Caerphilly’s Young Contemporary Musician of the Year competition.

Young musicians from across Caerphilly County Borough took part in the annual competition held at the Caerphilly Music Service’s Performing Arts Studio in Pontllanfraith.

The competition winners alongside the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Vera Jenkins and her consort Robert Jenkins

The winners were:

  • Among Others, a band from St Martins’ Comprehensive School won the ‘Young Composer of the Year’ category,
  • Sally Coggan from Heolddu Comprehensive School won the ‘Young Singer of the Year’ category, and
  • Sam Williams from Lewis School Pengam won the ‘Young Musician of the Year’ category on his bass guitar.

At the final the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Vera Jenkins presented the winners with their trophies and commended all entrants for the high standard of their music.

Later this year in March, the Classical version of the competition takes place.

Preliminary rounds in the voice, strings, woodwind, brass, percussion and piano classes begin the week of 5th March, with the grand final taking place at 6pm on Friday March 9, and is open to members of the public.
