Closed Abertridwr police station to be converted back into house

Abertridwr Police station which closed in November 2011

A planning application has been submitted to turn Abertridwr police station back into a residential house.

The village station, which was not open to the public, closed for good in November 2011 after plans to close it were originally leaked as far back as 2009. The station, on High Street, was mainly used by officers and PSCOs in the area as a base to catch-up on paperwork.

Gwent Police has issued the following statement.

“The building was not a fully functional police station, it was only used as a base for officers working out and about within the community (which continues regardless of the building being available). It did not have opening hours and a front desk that was manned like our actual ‘police stations’ across the force.

“The change to the premises was part of an on going project, reported and discussed openly at several Police Authority meetings and within the media, looking at how the public access our services. The aim of the review is to ensure that we offer the public of Gwent a wide variety of methods of contacting the Force, 24/7 365 days a year, at a time and place convenient to them.

“Officers continue to hold regular surgeries and PACT meetings locally in different premises which are all advertised on our website, we also use the mobile police station and communicate with residents through social media. Officers continue to carry out regular patrols in the area and do leaflet drops containing local information relevant to residents. The dedicated neighbourhood team that cover that area can also be contacted on 02920 857453.”
