A teenager has admitted murdering retired 58-year-old midwife Susan Williams at her home in Mill Road, Caerphilly.

Homeless David Matthews, 18, has admitted carrying out a horrific attack and killing the woman on February 28 this year.

The woman’s body was later discovered by police.

Police believe Mrs Williams had put Matthews, who was 17 at the time, up for the night after he had rowed with a girlfriend.

At a hearing at Newport Crown Court Matthews admitted murder.

He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on September 11.

Police have said they are still not clear what happened on the night because of Matthews’ reluctance to talk about the incident.

In the immediate aftermath of her murder, Mrs Williams’ family had paid tribute to her in a statement released through the police.

It said she was much-loved among staff members and residents at the Bedwas home where she cared for the elderly and infirm.

Her family said: “She was a naturally kind and caring person, a mother and grandmother who would not hesitate to help anyone in distress, be it a friend or a stranger.

“The community has lost a true carer and she will be sadly missed.

“Her family wish to thank everyone for their help and support at this very difficult time.”

Mrs Williams had worked in the Rhymney Valley for 30 years and during her career was a district midwife and had worked at Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital.
