MRI scanner installed at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Monday January 30th, 2012.

Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr will be able to perform MRI scans on patients after new equipment was installed at the hospital.

The five tonne scanner was moved the short distance across from the Ystrad Mynach Hospital and is now ready in the Radiology Department. The hospital started scans on Monday January 30.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is a medical imaging technique used to scan the inside a body to help diagnosis.

An MRI machine uses a powerful magnetic field to record and construct an image of the scanned area of the body.

MRI is particularly useful when scanning the brain, the heart, and cancerous tumours.

Amanda Evans, radiology manager in Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, said: “We are delighted that the scanner is now in place in the new hospital and our radiology staff will be carrying out scans by the end of this month.

“The scanner will provide patients with state of the art technology locally without the need to travel to other hospitals further afield.”
