Islwyn MP Chris Evans has used a debate in the House of Commons to raise awareness of the employment difficulties faced by those with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease affects 250,000 people in the UK. The Labour MP said the lack of discussion around the condition makes it difficult for sufferers to realise their full potential, particularly in a working environment.
Speaking in Tuesday’s debate, Mr Evans said: “Many of those who live with Inflammatory Bowel Disease suffer in silence; too embarrassed or afraid to speak openly about to their employers about a condition which affects every aspect of their day to day life.
“It is more common than many better known conditions such as MS and Parkinson’s disease; yet awareness and understanding of the condition is low.
“Employers, health professionals and MPs all have a role to play in raising awareness of IBD and ensuring that sufferers of the disease realise their potential in the workplace.”
