Leaders from Caerphilly County Borough Council will meet with heritage body Cadw this week to discuss free entry to Caerphilly Castle for a special two-day Christmas event.
The Caerphilly Medieval Christmas Fayre takes place on Saturday December 11 and and Sunday December 12. Last year’s successful event attracted thousands of visitors to the town centre but there was concern that shoppers had to pay to get into the castle grounds.
Lindsay Whittle, the leader of council, will join Cllr Ron Davies and Cllr Phil Bevan on Friday to formally request that Cadw waive the charges for this year.
Cllr Whittle said: “The Caerphilly Christmas Fayre is a major event which showcases the wealth of attractions that the town centre has to offer.
“The castle is a key draw for many people and we hope that Cadw will give visitors an early Christmas present by offering free entrance to this fantastic historic structure during the two-day event.”
Cllr Davies added: “Events like this can bring much needed investment to our town centres at a time when retailers need all the support they can get, so it’s important that we do everything we can to encourage as many people as possible to shop locally and boost the local economy.”
