Ty Hafan Blackwood Charity Shop to close

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Thursday February 9th, 2012.

Ty Hafan, the family hospice for young lives has announced it is to close its shop in High Street, Blackwood in June.

The decision to close was made following falling sales and the high cost of rent.

Ty Hafan’s Retail General Manager Justin Horton said “The purpose of all of our shops is to contribute as much money as possible towards the £3m annual running costs of the hospice which provides care and support for children, young people and their families across south Wales.

“Each shop is regularly evaluated to ensure that sufficient funds are contributed. Despite the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers the Blackwood shop has not contributed sufficient funds for some time. The falling sales together with the high rent costs do not make the shop viable.”

The news of Ty Hafan’s closure comes just a year after rival charity The British Heart Foundation pulled out of the town for similar reasons.

There will be no redundancies from the closure as any staff that are not on temporary contracts will be transferred to other Ty Hafan locations.

The charity said it will be working closely with its team of volunteers to find alternative roles within the organisation.

Mr Horton added “Ty Hafan would like to thank all the customers, staff and volunteers that have supported the Blackwood shop since it first opened.”
