Police warning after spate of aerial and Sky cable thefts in Bedwas and Caerphilly

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:50, Wednesday February 15th, 2012.

Police are warning residents to be on their guard because thieves are stealing aerial cables from people’s homes in the Bedwas and Caerphilly area.

In the last two weeks, ten properties in Bedwas and Caerphilly have been targeted in areas including: Castle Park, Dol Y Felin and Pontygwindy Road. It appears lengths of aerial cable, in particular Sky satellite cables are being cut in order to steal the copper inside.

Stuart Lewis, crime and disorder reduction officer for Bedwas and Caerphilly, said: “With the recent increase in the price of copper it appears criminals are cutting these cables in order to steal the metal inside. We are currently investigating the recent thefts and I would encourage the public to report any suspicious behaviour immediately on 101.”

Gwent Police has issued the following advice.

  • Make thefts more difficult by removing any easy access onto building roofs, waste bins and tall trees located near the building.
  • Store ladders in a secure place.
  • Maximise surveillance levels, including cutting back tall trees and vegetation that could otherwise provide a screen to hide criminal activities.
  • Encourage neighbours to keep a vigilant eye on your home and report any suspicious activity, particularly the unexpected arrival of workmen at the property.
  • Security mark metal goods.

If you have any information on scrap metal thefts in the area, then please contact 101.
