First Minister in London for energy talks

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:00, Monday February 20th, 2012.

First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones will be in London for talks with the UK Government and the other devolved bodies later today (Monday February 20).

He will be at a meeting of the Joint Ministerial Committee (JMC), to be chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and with Ministers from the other devolved governments and the UK Government.

The JMC provides a regular opportunity for government Ministers from across the UK to meet and talk about issues of mutual interest and is an important forum for discussion on matters of mutual interest, particularly against the backdrop of potential constitutional change.

The formal topic of this meeting of the JMC will be electricity market reform. The First Minister has repeatedly called on the UK Government to transfer to the Welsh Government control over the financial support system for renewable energy projects. Another area of concern is the rising cost of energy for energy intensive industries.

Speaking ahead of the meeting the First Minister said: “There are tremendous prospects for low carbon energy investments in Wales and that is why I am determined that we have the right tools available to us maximise these opportunities. Meeting such as this are an opportunity for the Welsh Government to raise our concerns and fight for Wales’ interests.”
