A taste of America with a twist comes to Caerphilly town with new deli

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Friday February 17th, 2012.

What does a Welsh-language book shop, a tarot reader and an American deli have in common?

Usually not a lot, unless of course you’re in Caerphilly town, where three enterprising market traders have opened a new shop together.

Customers lunching on bagels will also be able to pick-up the latest Welsh language book and have their fortune told in the new Clive Street premises called Yankee Doodles.

As well as tasting US-style deli food, people can also buy American imported goods such as cereals and chocolates

Lisa Linnard, who used to run the Retro Bin at Caerphilly Indoor Market, said: “It was my husband Carl’s idea. He suggested we do something different – something Caerphilly hasn’t got.

“As well as the deli, we sell American sweets, chocolates, cookies, cupcakes and pancakes.

“We also do teas and coffees, and while tea isn’t very American, it’s the one thing you have to do.”

Joining Lisa in her American adventure are former market colleagues Welsh book shop owner Menna Roberts and Tarot reader Etta Mae.

Lisa added: “We had this space at the back of the shop and we all get on really well from the market so we just decided to do it.”

Menna, whose business is called Siop Menna, said: “We opened in the market just under a year ago and it is a hothouse for businesses starting before moving on.”

Etta added: “What the market has done is enable us to have more of a focus on our individual businesses – it was a great place to start.”

The deli is located on 6 Clive Street, Caerphilly. For more information visit the Facebook page of Yankee Doodles and Siop Menna

Falch I gweld siop newydd eto yng Ngairffili.

It's great to see a new shop initiative within Caerffili Town. The indoor market has been an incubator for several shops who have now been able to take the next step onto the high street, and I wish the businesses all the very best for a successful future. Spread the word…

A good idea, but Siop Menna and the Tarot reader Etta Mae should have a street sign indicating their existence.
