Assembly to debate disability-related harassment report

On Wednesday (22 February), the National Assembly for Wales will debate a report examining disability-related harassment.

The report, published by the Communities, Equality and Local Government Committee highlights the lack of leadership and information-sharing that surrounds the problem in Wales.

It calls on the Welsh Government to make eliminating disability-related harassment a higher priority and to do more to encourage relevant agencies and authorities to work together.

The Committee’s inquiry found numerous examples of best practice around Wales but heard evidence that this information wasn’t being shared.

“Disability-related harassment is unacceptable in modern society and should be eradicated entirely,” said Ann Jones AM, Chair of the Communities, Equality and Local Government Committee.

“Our report examined the findings of a similar inquiry conducted by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission and detailed what local authorities, police, support groups, charities and other related agencies can do to combine their efforts, led by a strategic framework put in place by the Welsh Government.

“The Committee is pleased that the Minister for Finance accepted all ten of our recommendations in full and I look forward to hearing the views of my fellow Assembly Members during the debate.”
