Motorists have slowed down outside a school since a trial 20mph advisory speed limit was introduced in Machen last year.
Surveys outside the local primary school in Machen have shown speeds trimmed by an average of 6mph.
Ward councillor Ron Davies said: “Speed kills so I’m pleased motorists are taking note of the 20mph limit, although I would like to see them slow down further.
“Traffic speeds were a concern in the village for many years and the message to motorists remains ‘twenty is plenty’ outside the school gates. There are still individuals who disregard the limits and put children at risk. We shall have to keep this continually under review and see what further improvements can be made.”
During the morning peak hour mean surveys showed that speeds had been reduced by 6.6mph eastbound and 5mph westbound. At the end of the school day, the reduction observed was 6.6mph eastbound and 4.6mph westbound. The mean speed during start and end of the school day was 30.3mph and is now 24.6mph.
The scheme was the first where a 20mph speed restriction has been imposed on a main road within the county borough. The busy A468 is the main route through Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen and the road sees significant levels of vehicles using it each day.
