An elderly woman was the victim of a distraction theft when two robbers stole her necklace in Caerphilly town centre.

The 85-year-old victim, who was out shopping, was at the entrance to the Twyn car park in Caerphilly town centre on Tuesday (February 28).when a man approached her at around 3.15pm.

The man then asked her how far it was to London before a woman appeared and placed a necklace around her and took a gold-coloured necklace from her.

At the same time the man attempted to take jewellery from her wrists.

The robbers then ran through the car park towards Castle Court Shopping Centre when the elderly woman became distressed.

The woman thief is described as olive-skinned with dark hair, wearing a long black dress. The man is described as short.

A police spokesman said the theft was not violent.

The tactic of disorientating and distracting a victim to steal from them has been reported across the UK.

A similar crime took place in Watford in December last year and in Guildford in October last year.

Anyone with information about the incident, or saw anything suspicious, are asked to call Gwent Police on 101 or 01633 838111.
