Coleg Gwent hairdressing students show off style

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Thursday March 1st, 2012.

Hairdressing students at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys campus recently showed off their talents with an exhibition of work.

More than 40 students pampered, preened and polished their models for the campus’ annual competition.

Highlights included a Geisha sporting a dress made from newspaper, tribal body art, a Barbie doll-inspired hairstyle and a witch’s hat styled from hair.

Level 3 Theatrical Makeup students had a choice of two themes. In the Urban Culture competition Sarah Pugh’s tribal-inspired body art scooped first place, followed by Madison Mitchard’s Geisha creation. The group’s alternative theme of Dreams and Nightmares inspired Katie Hopkins’s Barbie-based interpretation of dreams, which took second place.

Level 3 Hairdressing competitors took their vision from Musicals, with the help of Level 2 Theatrical Makeup students who did the models’ makeup. First place went to the Wicked-inspired Rhiannon Ducket with Rebecca Perkins and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ taking second, followed by Cari Dight’s aquatic interpretation of the Little Mermaid.

Making the most of other expertise at the campus, Performing Arts students provided the music, staging and lighting as the models strutted their stuff.

With a twist on the briefs of previous years, the students had to create hair pieces, which proved as successful as it was challenging:

Tutor Tammy Wheeler co-ordinated the competition.

She said: “Considering they hadn’t had any experience in this area the students worked like professionals and it gave them a chance to show off their creative side which made it more challenging, but they had great fun.

“The standard of work was excellent with the students putting in an exceptional level of effort in preparation for the competition, from coming up with concepts to creating costumes.”

Judged by college hair and beauty tutors and two ex-students who won the competition last year, the competition proved a resounding success.

Alice in Wonderland: Work of Rebecca Perkins (18, Crumlin) – 2nd place hairdressing – Musicals competition
Little Mermaid: Work of Cari Dight (18, Pontllanfraith) – 3rd place hairdressing – Musical competition
Doll: Work of Katie Hopkins (18, Caerphilly) – 2nd place Theatrical – Dreams and Nightmares competition
Geisha: Work of Madison Mitchard (17, Oakdale) – 2nd place Theatrical – Urban Culture competition
