The latest ‘No Cold Calling Zone’ in Caerphilly County Borough has been launched at a New Tredegar sheltered housing complex.
The scheme, by Gwent Police and the council’s Trading Standards team, sends a clear message that doorstep callers are unwelcome at the Glynsyfi Sheltered Housing Complex.
Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for public protection said: “We are committed to helping residents feel safe in their community, and the introduction of a no cold calling zone at Glynsyfi provides them with the full backing of the council and police when dealing with doorstep callers.”
Though a No Cold Calling Zone does not make doorstep selling illegal, it gives the residents confidence that a clear message is being sent to callers.
PC Claire Young, Crime and Disorder Reduction Officer for the Rhymney area, said: “The aim of this no cold calling zone is to deter companies from selling in this area, as well as giving the residents the confidence to refuse or challenge sellers, while having the support of police and local authority behind them.”
Residents in the complex have been given information leaflets outlining the scheme as well as giving advice on how to check if a caller is genuine.
Window stickers have also been handed out warning door-to-door salesmen. Prominent signs have also gone up on nearby lampposts.
The scheme follows the success of several No Cold Calling Zones introduced across the county borough.
People who live in certain streets in Trethomas, Pontllanfraith and Nelson, as well as the residents of sheltered housing complexes in Maesycwmmer and Newbridge have also received guidance on how to avoid cold callers and tips on how to deal with telesales phone calls.
