Heavy snow causes disruption across Caerphilly County Borough

Heavy snow this morning across Caerphilly County Borough has led to huge disruption on the roads and public transport.

Caerphilly Mountain is closed and there is serious delay on the A470. The vast majority of the county borough’s schools are closed with only a handful opening their doors.

Arriva Trains Wales has said there are delays on Valley Lines of up to 40 minutes because of signalling problems caused by the snow while motorists are being advised by Gwent Police to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “With schools breaking up for Christmas holidays or closed because of the snow, we are urging parents and children to be vigilant. While it can be tempting in this weather, people should not to walk on frozen water such as rivers and lakes due to the dangers posed.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council has closed all of its offices today and said that only critical services will be operational for the rest of the day.

Its emergency numbers are operational, but the council has stated they will be under a lot of pressure. Council offices are expected to open as usual on Monday December 20.

The council’s annual Operation Santa, which collects donated presents for needy children in the county borough, has been postponed for this weekend.
