Derek Brockway to speak about saving energy at Caerphilly event

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 16:33, Thursday March 15th, 2012.

Wales’ Favourite Weatherman Derek Brockway will be speaking at a Caerphilly event on Friday aimed at communities saving energy and helping tackle climate change.

The BBC Wales weatherman will be addressing the free event which will be held at the Twyn Community Centre on Friday March 16 between 2pm and 4pm, and will discuss the effects of climate change and enthusing residents to take control.

The partners behind this project are housing association United Welsh, Caerphilly County Borough Council and Charter Housing.

The event hopes to find ‘Energisers – people who can then offer support in their community to help other residents save money on energy bills.

Full training will be given to the energisers who can champion the subjects in their local community.

Steve Cranston, head of community investment at United Welsh said: “This is a great opportunity for members of our community to take control of the future of our borough and learn about saving money on energy bills. We are excited to have Derek at our event as a great ambassador for tackling climate change. If you have an interest in the subject or just want to find out about lowering your bills pop in to the event where we will be able to answer your questions.”

Cllr Colin Mann, deputy leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, said: “This innovative initiative, which we believe is the first of its kind in the area, aims to educate residents on their energy consumption and on how people can play their part in helping to tackle climate change.”

He continued, “Having an ambassador like Derek Brockway on board I hope will really enthuse residents to get involved in this scheme, and I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and find out more”.
