The Olympic Torch route through Caerphilly town for this summer’s games has been announced.
Residents from across the county borough are being encouraged to come along and share in the excitement of the Olympic torch relay when it visits Caerphilly on Saturday May 26.
The torch will begin its journey at the top of Watford Road at approximately 9.42am and will travel along St Martin’s Road, along Cardiff Road through Caerphilly town centre, turn left at the traffic lights near the Piccadilly, and onto Nantgarw Road where it will complete its journey near the crossroads onto St Cenydd Road.
Anthony O’Sullivan, chief executive of Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “This will be a wonderful occasion for residents of our county borough to come together and see the Olympic Flame and witness the spectacle of the Olympic torch relay.
“Today’s announcement of the street route really brings the part that Caerphilly will play in the Olympic torch relay to life, and I have no doubt that our residents will turn out in their thousands to line the route and help celebrate this fantastic occasion.”
Once the Olympic torch festivities are over, the council has organised an ‘Olympic Park’ on Crescent Road for people to have a go at a variety of sports. For visitors looking for something to eat, there will also be a major food festival in town with cookery demonstrations and stalls.
The Olympic Torch coming to Caerphilly also coincides with the town’s flower festival.
