Plans for the regeneration of Bargoed town centre are to go on display from Saturday with residents urged to come up with a new name for the town’s ‘Spar Square’.

Details of the next phases of the development will be available at Gigabytes Café, in the town’s High Street.

The first phase of the development will see a new supermarket, several unit shops, a new town square and nearly 400 parking spaces.

Supermarket Morrisons are currently in negotiations to be the anchor tenant for the development.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is also looking into the possibility of a multiplex cinema for the area in a future development.

Cllr Ron Davies, cabinet member for regeneration and planning said: “Bargoed is a town facing a very bright future, and I would encourage as many residents as possible to come along and view the exciting regeneration proposals for their town.”

Residents can view the plans on the following dates, and staff from Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Urban Renewal Team will be on hand to answer any questions:

  • Saturday January 15 – 10.30am to 1pm
  • Monday January 17 – 3.30pm to 5.30pm
  • Tuesday January 18 – 3.30pm to 5.30pm
  • Saturday January 22 – 10.30am to 1pm
  • Tuesday January 25 – 3.30pm to 5.30pm
  • Wednesday January 26 – 11am to 1pm

Redevelopment work in Bargoed is now well underway. Hanbury Road Baptist Chapel will be turned into a new library and Bargoed will also boast a new bus station.

Millions of pounds of funding has been secured for the extensive regeneration of the town from the European Union and the Welsh Assembly.

This first phase includes a flight of steps from the bus station up to High Street, where two shop units are being demolished and a small public square formed in their place. The works also include new public toilets, bus shelters and a pedestrian link to the Hanbury Road car park to the south.

Phase 1 is scheduled to be completed in April 2011 and will be followed by further phases to enhance High Street and Hanbury Road.

Caerphilly Council wants to hear from residents with ideas for a formal name for the square in Bargoed, known locally as ‘Spar Square’.

People can submit their suggestions at the local display at Gigabytes Café or email them to planning@caerphilly.gov.uk

The closing date is Friday January 28.
