Police target metal thieves

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Wednesday March 28th, 2012.

A police operation targeting metal theft has resulted in four arrests.

Two loads of scrap metal were also seized during Operation Ignite, which took place from March 12 to 16.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of theft in Tiryberth after police found up to 30 stolen car batteries.

Two youths were also arrested on suspicion of stealing gas pipes from external walls of houses in Bedwas and have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Officers also seized two van loads of metal. The scrap will be sold and the money will be reinvested by Gwent Police into further Operation Ignite work.

Sergeant Simon Clark said: “This latest Operation Ignite work highlights our continued determination to work hard in partnership with other agencies to tackle the problem of metal theft.

“I would urge anyone who has any information about metal theft or those involved to contact Gwent Police by dialling 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.”
