A Blackwood-based midwife has been awarded Welsh Midwife of the Year by The Royal College of Midwives.

Geraldine Goodchild was nominated by grateful mum, Paula Harris, for being “a positive influence” and providing “around the clock support” before and after the birth of her daughter in October 2009.

Mrs Harris said: “When we met Gerry, my husband and I were agog with the anticipation of becoming parents for the first time. She was like a great firework of energy and had this magical way of making you feel unique.”

Ms Goodchild said: “I am honoured to win this award, because providing the highest level of care to mums and babies means a lot to me. I really value being a part of this special time in someone’s life and the opportunity to make a really positive difference to that total experience.”
