RSPCA appeal after horse shot dead in Markham

The RSPCA has launched an investigation after a horse was found dead with a gunshot to the head

The animal’s body was found by its owner in a field in Markham near Blackwood at 11am Monday.

The three-year-old Skewbald stallion was last seen alive at 7.30pm the previous day.

RSPCA officer Sophie Daniels said there was no indication as to the type of weapon used to shoot the animal.

She said: “This poor horse was shot at close range, quite possibly by walking over towards someone at the field gate.

“The owner says that this horse was particularly friendly and he probably went towards the person who shot him.

“His death would have been slow and painful and it’s imperative that we find the criminal who committed this vicious attack.”

The RSPCA said anyone with information about the incident can contact the charity on 0300 1234 999.

Gwent Police is also investigating.

Another case of the illegal use of a shotgun in Gwent.

The Gwent Police really do have something on their hands with the number of incidents involving illegal use of firearms in our area. Puppies with half their heads shot away, a householder threatened with guns in Rhymney, and now this horse shot in Markam.

I would ask what, if anything the Gwent Police are doing to bring this maniac in this community to justice. After all they know the identity of every gun licence holder, they issue the issue the permit to use guns.
