Caerphilly County Borough Council has revealed that Bargoed saw nine new businesses open in 2011, compared to eight the previous year.
The number of businesses closing down also fell from eight in 2010 to just two.
The local authority has said that retailer confidence has remained high in Bargoed due its ‘BIG Idea’ regeneration scheme, which sees improvements to roads as well as the building of a new Morrisons supermarket.
Andrew Highway, town centre development manager welcomed the news.
He said: “It is important to recognise the significance of seeing new businesses open in Bargoed, this is a clear indication of growing confidence in the town. Throughout the process of change, the council has valued the support it has received from local retailers and the Bargoed Chamber of Trade. The next phases of the regeneration programme will introduce an exciting series of town centre enhancement proposals, through Hanbury Road, High Street and Upper High Street, creating new, improved public spaces, wider, safer pavements and new public artwork.”
Essential utility works in Bargoed
Due to the building of the new 56,000 sq ft Morrisons store, essential utility works are to be carried out.
It is anticipated that traffic will be disrupted on Hanbury Road for only one day in May, in order to lay necessary telecommunication cables and that road closures will be undertaken for five days over a weekend in August for the works regarding the sewage systems required for the site.
Once the utility work is completed, the construction will move to the area of the site, which will be inside hoarding and additional road closures are not planned.
The Morrisons development will also have a variety of mixed-use retail units of 20,500 sq ft together with a 400 space car park.
Excellent news for Bargoed to be bucking the trend. Assuming they are actual commercial businesses as I note they are not listed.
