Caerphilly County Borough is to get a new mobile art gallery.
Instead of being fixed in one place, the Awen Gallery will move from location to location across the county borough.
To launch the gallery, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s arts service has obtained a touring exhibition of works by Polish-born artist Josef Herman, which will be displayed at the Risca Palace Library, Tredegar Street, from April 24 to June 1.
The exhibition records Herman’s time living in the mining community of Ystradgynlais, and depicts the daily struggle that the ordinary man and women faced in the last century, including sketches of miners, land workers and fishermen.
The Awen Gallery has primarily been created to display art in the Great Hall at Caerphilly Castle in July as part of the Cultural Olympiad in the run up to the London 2012 celebrations.
The borough currently has no dedicated art gallery so the Awen Gallery will tour around the borough and be utilised by community groups, students, and professional artists to bring the finest touring exhibitions to the county.
