Residents have opposed plans to open an off licence near a school in Castle View, Caerphilly.
Bargain Booze wants to open a branch at a soon-to-be-vacant unit on Castle View Shopping Centre, once Nelson’s Chemist has fully moved to the new Nantgarw Medical Centre.
Councillors Stephen Kent, James Fussell and Colin Elsbury, who represent the St Martin’s ward, have organised a petition for residents to sign against the licensing application.
The trio have been out collecting signatures from concerned parents of pupils at Cwrt Rawlin Primary School.
Cllr Fussell said: “Colin, myself and Steve have been inundated with messages through Facebook about this.
“We support local business, but the proximity of Bargain Booze with the school is a concern. It sends out the wrong message about alcohol.”
There are also plans for a Subway sandwich chain for the unit.
Parent Wendy Thompson, 38, who lives on the estate, said: “The Subway is going to damage the chip shop, which is a local business, but it is the Bargain Booze that is going to cause the real problems. It will be the fifth licensed premises in the area.”
There is A Tesco a few doors down ,they don't really Need A Bargain Booze.
I notice that this proposal is strongly objected to by all groups and candidates in the current election for Councillors ,so, whoever is elected by the people of St martins this issue is not a political one, and, unanimity appears to be the name of the game.
I thought those schools were only infant and junior, will it really effect them that much to have an off licence close by? Stopping the subway chain will help the 3 other local takeaway shops that are on site and their is a Subway in Caerphilly town already. But town is full of similar takeaways so it's not quite as clean cut as all that. Not to mention the fact that Subways are franchised businesses so do benefit local business men.
