Fire crews have extinguished a major blaze at a recycling centre in Ystrad Mynach.
Crews from Cefn Fforest, Pontypridd, Caerphilly and Cardiff Central were called to Amber Services Waste Management and Recycling, on Dyffryn Business Park, at 4.30am this morning.
A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said that 200 tonnes of recycling material had been alight but that crews had managed to put the fire out by 10.45am.
Ten appliances and a hydraulic platform were used to tackle the blaze.
Gwent Police had closed the A469 between Ystrad Mynach and Llanbradach because smoke was obstructing the road but officers reopened one lane in each direction at 11am.
Officers from Environment Agency Wales are now investigating the fire.
The Agency said that around 200 tonnes of mixed construction waste was on fire and it is thought this waste was non- hazardous.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service retained most of the water used to tackle the blaze on site through interceptors and drainage systems.
The Environment Agency said a small amount may have entered the River Rhymney, but so far this has had minimal impact on the river.
A spokesman said: “Our officers are currently assessing the environmental impact of the fire, and we are working with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service to ensure that impact on the local environment is minimised.
“Amber Services Waste Management is a regulated site and we will take any action as necessary to prevent it happening again.”
