Islwyn MP Chris Evans has welcomed new sentencing guidelines which could see owners of dangerous dogs going to jail.
The Sentencing Council for England and Wales has said owners that fail to stop their dogs attacking people in a public place should face six months in prison.
A longstanding campaigner against dangerous dogs, Mr Evans has previously urged the Government to take action against irresponsible owners.
Speaking after the announcement, he said: “Over 6,000 people have been victims of dog attacks in the past year and very rarely are dog owners punished.
“These new guidelines go some way to making sure owners think twice before letting their dog loose in a public place.
“However, although punishment of offenders is important, more still has to be done to stop dog attacks happening in the first place.
“The Government still has to introduce preventative measures to help reduce the number of serious injuries caused by dangerous dogs.”
I would like to see a dog law that states ANY dog outside their home to have a muzzle on at all times that way all people especially the young children and of course with a muzzle on other dog owners with well behaved dogs and other animals ( just thinking of a mother & and her foal attacked on Dartmoor recently) would be alot safer .
