The four Welsh police forces have launched their joint summer drink drive campaign.
Police claim that during the summer months, with an increase in parties and barbecues, instances of drink driving increase.
Superintendent Jim Baker, of Gwent Police, said: “We are committed to promoting and enforcing road safety in Gwent and will be patrolling the force area throughout the summer in a bid to reduce the number of motorists who decide to get behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs.
“I would like to warn people not to give into the temptation to drink and drive after summer events such as barbecues, weddings and days out.
“Drinking and driving is totally unacceptable and ruins hundreds of lives every year.
“Drivers need to realise that alcohol, or drugs, slow your reactions and affect your ability to judge speed and distances. Also, passengers need to take action to stop their friends or family members from getting behind the wheel after drinking.
“Drink driving is simply not worth the risk.”
Chair of Road Safety Wales, Susan Storch, said: “Our advice is that if you’re expecting to drink alcohol during the Summer season, plan how to get home without driving.
“If you’re drinking at barbecues be aware that you may not know how much you are consuming and don’t offer an alcoholic drink to someone you know is planning to drive and don’t accept a lift from a driver you know has drunk alcohol. Be aware that you may still be over the legal limit the following day – the only safe way is to either drink or drive not both.”
