A derelict patch of council nursery land has been transformed into a thriving community garden.

In just six years, the land at Waunfawr Park has been turned into a green hub within the village.

The transformation has been undertaken by volunteers working with Caerphilly County Borough Council, charity Ground Work Caerphilly, Coleg Gwent, Brooklands Day Centre, and Waunfawr Primary School.

The work included introducing a community bicycle scheme that enables youngsters and adults with disabilities to ride modified bikes in safety through the park, a forest school, glass houses and organic vegetable patches. The park has been awarded a Green Flag for its excellence.

Mark Williams, Head of Public Services said, “Waunfawr Community Park is a true testament to partnership working. Every day, summer or winter, the park is a hive of activity, residents young and old work together to create and maintain a beautiful garden.”

John Ridgewell, Independent Green Space Advisor said: “This garden is without doubt one of the best of its kind in Wales.”
