Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Glan Yr Afon, Rhymney

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:57, Monday June 11th, 2012.

On Tuesday June 5, residents in Glan Yr Afon, Rhymney came out – despite the rain – to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Carys-Ann Williams one of the organisers said: “We set-up and lined gazebos filled with decorations, fairy lights, tables and chairs where the children could sit and eat. We had a face painting stall where the children could have the union jack painted and a speaker system set up for music.

“Mickey Mouse later made an appearance to have some jubilee fun and had photos done with the children.

“The children were also presented with their own commemoration coin personalised with their name and a Union Jack box full of jubilee-themed goodies.

“The residents decorated each house with union jack flags and surrounded Glan Yr Afon in red, white and blue bunting. We all enjoyed ourselves and I would like to personally thank everyone who participated in the Jubilee celebration.”

Councillor Carl Cuss, who represents the Twyn Carno ward, said: “It was nice to see the community come together and celebrate 60 years of the Queen’s reign, the Diamond Jubilee.

“In particular I know how hard the residents worked in Glan Yr Afon and it became the talking point of the community. The celebrations have not finished yet, The Rhymney Communities First Partnership have organised a Jubilee Celebration and Fun Day at the Eisteddfod Field on Saturday June 16 between 12pm and 3pm. All activities are free of charge so please come along and support the event.”
