A New Tredegar man has been jailed for life for the murder of his partner after she changed her Facebook status from married to single.

Brian Lewis, 31, of New Tredegar, denied murdering 26-year-old Hayley Jones but a jury at Cardiff Crown Court found him guilty.

Lewis strangled and stabbed Ms Jones at their home in the Phillipstown area on March 12.

Ms Jones, a mother of four, was found stabbed at the family home by her children.

On March 2, she changed her Facebook status from married to single and she made it clear their relationship was over.

The jury was told during the trial that Lewis had attacked Ms Jones with a kitchen knife at 4am as she was asleep on the sofa and had also strangled her.

Judge Mr Justice Roderick Evans said Lewis had been “frustrated, angry and hurt” and that he must serve at least 14 years.

On the day of the murder Lewis rang 999 and told the police what he had done and fled the scene.
He later gave himself up at Blackwood police station.

Detective Chief Inspector Russ Tiley, of Gwent Police, said: “The children and family of Hayley have been very brave through this process and hopefully will now have some closure.”
