Gold necklace stolen in Caerphilly town street in distraction theft

A woman had her gold necklace stolen in a bizarre distraction theft in Caerphilly town yesterday (June 18).

At 11.35am a dark-coloured car stopped alongside a woman on Pontygwindy Road. The two occupants got out and asked the woman for directions.

The driver, a man with a moustache and foreign accent, showed the victim a map while a woman put a chain around her neck.

The victim refused to take the chain and the car drove away. She then realised her gold necklace had been taken.

Five minutes earlier, a similar incident had happened

A similar incident occurred in Lon y Llyn, Caerphilly, where another woman was asked for directions by occupants of a dark saloon car and jewellery was placed on her.

Nothing was taken during this incident, but officers believe it may be linked to the theft in Pontygwindy Road.

The two incidents are similar to another distraction theft which happened in February when two robbers stole an 85-year-old’s necklace in Caerphilly town centre.

Gwent Police has said the latest two incidents are not linked to the February theft.

The tactic of disorientating and distracting a victim to steal from them has been reported across the UK.

A similar crime took place in Watford in December last year and in Guildford in October last year.

If anyone has information about either incident, or saw anything suspicious, they are asked to call Gwent Police on 101.
