Caerphilly Council staff raise cash for charities

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Wednesday June 20th, 2012.

Caerphilly Council Staff raised £1,400 for charity Action on Elder Abuse on last Friday’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

At the council’s Penallta House headquarters, employees donated money, dressed down, bought raffle tickets and cakes.

Others took part in an abseil off Penallta Rock. Hundreds of staff also pledged support on signature walls.

Cllr. Robin Woodyatt, cabinet member for social services, said: “It is fantastic to see so many council employees fully supporting such a worthwhile and under discussed topic. By raising awareness of Elder Abuse we can help to prevent it occurring in the community.”

The recent charity fundraising effort follows that of another group of council employees who raised £2,500.

On May 26, youth workers Lee Kabza, Caroline Millington, Michelle Challenger and Clare Jones tackled the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge of Snowdon, Cader Idris and Pen-Y-Fan for Cancer Resrach Wales.

Setting off on their first ascent at 4.30am the group climbed for 13 hours, finally crossing the finish line at 9pm.
