Police warning over distraction thefts

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Thursday June 28th, 2012.

Police are warning people to be extra vigilant against distraction thefts after two further attempts to steal jewellery were reported in Newport.

The latest incidents are similar to ones that happened in Caerphilly last week.

On June 18, a woman had her gold necklace stolen when a dark-coloured car stopped alongside a woman on Pontygwindy Road. The two occupants got out and asked the woman for directions.

The driver, a man with a moustache and foreign accent, showed the victim a map while a woman put a chain around her neck.

The victim refused to take the chain and the car drove away. She then realised her gold necklace had been taken.

A similar incident occurred in Lon y Llyn, Caerphilly, where another woman was asked for directions by occupants of a dark saloon car and jewellery was placed on her.

The latest attempted thefts happened in Newport in Stow Park Avenue at 7.10pm on Tuesday June 26 and Melfort Road on Monday June 25 at 6.40pm.

Both involved a woman getting out of a car to ask women walking alone for directions.

The woman, described as foreign and possibly Eastern European, offered items of jewellery while trying to steal other items of jewellery worn by the victims.

Both attempted thefts in Newport were unsuccessful.

A Gwent Police spokesman said: “Vehicles used have been described as a black Clio, possibly 02 plate, in Caerphilly and a large grey car in Newport.

“Men and children have also been seen in both vehicles when these offences have taken place.

“If anybody has any information on these incidents, or if anybody believes they have seen the cars or suspects described, please call 101.”
