Plaid call for youth champion on new Police and Crime Panel

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:00, Thursday July 5th, 2012.

Plaid Cymru is calling for Caerphilly Council’s youth champion to serve on the proposed new Police and Crime Panel for Gwent.

Plaid leader Colin Mann has been chosen as a representative along with a Labour councillor but there is a possibility that Caerphilly and Newport councils might have a third representative.

The panel, which has to be established by October, will scrutinise and support the new Police Commissioner who will be elected in November.

Plaid councillor Mike Prew, who is the authority’s youth champion, said: “This panel will have a hugely important role in the community following the election of the new Police Commissioner.

“I hope if the opportunity arises the council nominates the youth champion whoever that is for the role because it is important that the voices of young people are heard.

“Bodies like this need to be relevant to their communities and the young people I meet are keen to make a difference. They are often unfairly stigmatised so it would be great if their views were taken on board in this panel.”

Councillor Prew, who represents the Morgan Jones ward, has been the area’s youth champion for four years with another election due in September.

He was originally voted in as youth champion in 2008 as part of a special competition called ‘I’m a Councillor – Get me out of here!’
