Unique skills of ex-service men and women should be used in workplace says Islwyn MP

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Tuesday July 10th, 2012.

The unique skills of ex-service men and women need to be used in the workplace, according to Islwyn MP Chris Evans.

Mr Evans has backed a new Labour Party scheme which encourages companies to guarantee a job interview for ex-forces personnel.

National companies such as O2, Greggs, John Lewis and New Look have already signed up to the Labour Party’s ‘Veterans Interview Programme’ which is also being backed by the Royal British Legion.

With some 30,000 member of the Armed Forces facing redundancy as a result of government cuts, the scheme encourages firms to show their respect for the skills of former members of the armed forces by voluntarily offering them a job interview.

Speaking after the launch of the scheme, Mr Evans said: “People who have served in the armed forces have unique and specific skills which can be utilised in the workplace.

“I am delighted that several companies have voluntarily signed up to the initiative and are helping to give veterans a chance to re-enter employment.

“Our veterans are a major asset to our country and we must do all we can to increase their access to employment.”
