Blackwood Youth Centre to be re-opened

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:00, Thursday May 12th, 2011.

Blackwood Youth Centre, which burnt down in 2009, is to get a new home after councillors agreed a £610,000 scheme to rebuild it.

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet has said the youth centre will be sited at Blackwood Comprehensive School and will pay for an extension of the school hall and a new multi-use games area

Councillors agreed on a report that recommended the youth club be sited at the school.

Cllr Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education, leisure and lifelong learning said: “I am delighted to present this report on Blackwood Youth Centre, which has been warmly greeted by local councillors and young people.

“Once completed, this facility will help ensure that local youngsters continue to be able to spend their leisure time taking part in positive, constructive activities in a brand new, fit-for-purpose location.”

The cost of a new extension and alterations to the site to make it fit-for-purpose would cost approximately £500,000, with an additional cost of approximately £110,000 for a floodlit multi-use games area. This will be paid for by the insurance payment from the original fire.
