Delays expected until Friday on Valley Lines after Cardiff landslide

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:21, Monday August 13th, 2012.

Rail passengers into Cardiff using Valley Lines can expect disruption until at least Friday because of a landslide, Arriva Trains Wales says.

The landslide happened on Friday August 10 between Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Central station. A collapsed retaining wall has seen five tonnes of earth on the tracks.

An amended timetable has been introduced and will be place for the week.

Timetable alterations (subject to change at short notice) include:

  • Services between Cardiff Central and Merthyr Tydfil will be diverted via the City Line, calling at all stations.
  • Services from Cardiff Central to Aberdare will run to Radyr via City Line and then calling at all stations to Aberdare, and the same on the return.
  • Treherbert services will run through to Cardiff Queen Street and then onto Cardiff Bay.
  • A limited service from Rhymney and Caerphilly will run through Cardiff Queen Street and then onto Cardiff Bay.
  • Services from Coryton terminate at Heath Low Level.
  • Services between Penarth and Cardiff Central will run half-hourly.
  • Services between Cardiff Central, Barry Island and Bridgend (via Vale of Glamorgan) will run as a shuttle service.

A shuttle bus service will operate between Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Central.
Services on the Valley Lines network will be disrupted and subject to delays and cancellations at short notice. Some mainline services may also be disrupted.

Mike Bagshaw, Commercial Director for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “Our primary concern is to ensure that this regrettable situation is resolved as quickly as possible with the least disruption possible to our customers. Arriva Trains Wales is working closely with Network Rail who are leading the effort to repair the line, however during this time there will be unavoidable disruption to local train services and every effort is being made to minimise the inconvenience to our customers.”

Customers are advised to check for travel updates before travelling and allow additional time for their journey.
