A painting of Risca Colliery has been unveiled in Risca Palace.
Caerphilly County Borough Council has said the painting, by Osi Rhys Osmond, will act as a striking reminder of the area’s rich social and industrial history.
The painting was unveiled recently by Cllr Rhianon Passmore, cabinet member for education and lifelong learning at Caerphilly County Borough Council.
The painting will be on display at Risca Palace temporarily having been donated by Dr John Herbert, Mrs Sidonie Herbert and the wider Herbert family.
Cllr Passmore said: ”I am delighted to unveil such a magnificent piece of historical art in Risca Palace, a building that has been recently restored to its former glory. The generous offering will see the painting greatly admired by local residents in the busy Library space situated in the heart of the town.
“Beyond this temporary contribution, I am currently meeting with the appropriate officers with a view to instigate a new artist in residence scheme, which will be a tremendous cultural benefit to the community.”
Osi Rhys Osmond comes from Wattsville and is a member of both the Arts Council of Wales and the highly respected Gorsedd of the bards. His family has a long association with the mining heritage of the Sirhowy valley and a number of his relatives were miners.
He said: “This particular piece of art illustrates my passion for changing landscapes and the evolution of industries. I am deeply honoured that Risca Palace will act as a host for my artwork to be enjoyed by local residents who can celebrate in the rich social and industrial history of Risca.”
Risca Palace recently showcased the work of painter Josef Herman, who is the subject of a book published by Mr Osmond, and is available at Hanbury Chapel Library in Bargoed.
