A nature reserve in Aberbargoed has been awarded a Welsh Government grant of £65,000.
Aberbargoed Greenlands, which is the country’s first urban National Nature Reserve, will spend the money on building stone walling, an off-street parking area and the planting of native trees and shrubs.
The tree planting and stone walling are expected to help address air quality and noise issues in the area.
Cllr Ken James, cabinet member responsible for regeneration, planning and sustainable development, said: “We were delighted when, earlier this year, the grasslands were declared a NNR as it became the first not to be located in a rural, coastal or upland area.
“I am pleased that it has been recognised as a worthy recipient of Welsh Government funding and I hope that it will go some way in protecting the wildlife and nature that thrive in the grasslands from the surrounding urban environment.
“This grant also provides the council with the opportunity to further enhance a wonderful green space, which will in turn be more easily enjoyed by the local community.”
Environment Minister John Griffiths, said: “I am committed to improving local environments and was delighted to announce the pilot Tranquil, Greener and Cleaner Places programme earlier this year. Today’s announcement supports local authority projects that deliver environmental improvements for everyone to enjoy. The programme focuses on improving air quality, environmental noise and tranquil green spaces.
“I am concerned that our poorest communities, and especially those living in urban areas, experience the worst quality local environments with fly tipping, litter, unsafe roads, high levels of pollution and lack of access to green space. The projects receiving funding today will provide an immediate benefit to poorer communities.”
