Staff sickness levels fall at Caerphilly County Borough Council

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:00, Tuesday September 11th, 2012.

Sickness levels among staff at Caerphilly County Borough Council have fallen, according to a new report.

Absences due to illness across the council fell from 4.34% in 2010/11 to 3.93% in 2011/12. The report also noted that during the first half of 2011/12, 46% of council staff had 100% attendance.

Of the staff members that were off work because of ill health, almost half were absent for a maximum of five days.

As a result of the falling absences, £300,000 has been saved in agency fees for the cost of temporary staff.

The report – a review of the council’s absence procedure – was recently presented to the council’s cabinet.

Cllr Christine Forehead, cabinet member responsible for HR and governance said: “I am pleased that progress is continuing to be made in the area of managing sickness absence. The continued improvements are due to the commitment of staff, the operation of a flexible work scheme and the advice and support available to colleagues, which effectively assists them back to work.”
