Council plans new park on site of former Markham Colliery

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Thursday September 20th, 2012.

The former site of Markham Colliery is to be turned into a new country park, Caerphilly County Borough Council has announced.

This week members of the council’s cabinet approved a report on the purchase the land.

In March cabinet, then under the control of Plaid Cymru, approved plans to buy the former Markham Colliery site. At a meeting of cabinet on Tuesday September 18, members approved amendments to the legislation from last year, which will allow the site to be purchased under provisions from the Countryside Act 1967.

Cllr Ken James, cabinet member responsible for regeneration, planning and sustainable development, said: “I am pleased that progress is being made in this land acquisition. The redevelopment of the former colliery at Markham is an exciting project that will promote healthier and more enjoyable lifestyles for our residents and will further enhance the beautiful landscape that our county borough boasts.”

Planning consent for the creation of a country park at the site was granted on November 4, 2011, while the purchase of the site will be funded through the Head of the Valley’s Initiative.

Good use of this land, let us hope similar use is made of the Bedwas pit site in years to come.
