An IT company’s tenth anniversary celebration raised more than £2,000 for cancer charity Macmillan.

Bedwas-based Excellence IT held a charity golf event last week at Bryn Meadows Golf Club followed by an evening meal in the company of Machen comedian Rod Woodward.

Andy Green, co-founder and co-director of the company explained: “Sadly my wife died of leukaemia in 2005. We needed a lot of support as a family and the support Macmillan gave us was phenomenal.

“We wanted to give something back, as cancer affects so many people, while at the same time thanking our customers and suppliers.”

Speaking ahead of the tee-off, co-founder and co-director Andy Beer joked his golfing skills.

He said: “I’m just hoping to hit a ball – and I mean that most sincerely. I’m not taking the golf side of things too seriously, today is all for a good cause.

“Every family has been affected by cancer these days and it’s very close to my heart. My father-in-law passed away last year and Macmillan was involved there.

Forty players took to the course before more guests joined them for the evening celebration with Rod Woodward.

The Machen comedian said: “I’ve done work for Macmillan before and have been involved with a few of their functions.

“This has come at a poignant time for me. My dad has been diagnosed with lymphoma and he’s just started treatment.

“The more help and support you give, the better things get for Macmillan – the work they do is amazing.

Rebecca Parke, fundraising manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “We are extremely grateful to Excellence IT for choosing to support Macmillan with their ten year anniversary celebrations.

“All the team at Excellence IT worked incredibly hard at putting the event together which was a huge success all round.

“Macmillan Cancer Support is almost entirely funded by donations so the support of local businesses like Excellence IT is vital to helping us continue our aim of reaching and improving the lives of everyone affected by cancer.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the event and also congratulations to Excellence IT on their ten year anniversary.”
