A 30-year-old man is due to appear before magistrates on Saturday morning charged with arson with intent to endanger life after a crisp factory in Crumlin burned down.

Workers at the Real Crisp factory on the Pen Y Fan Industrial Estate in Crumlin had to be evacuated in the early hours of Thursday morning because of the blaze

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it received a call at 3.18am to Sirhowy Valley Foods.

Sixty-five firefighters from 20 stations were sent to the incident. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said that on arrival at 3.30am, three-quarters of the building was ablaze.

Firefighters managed to contain and extinguish the fire quickly.

Gwent Police said a man from Abertillery will appear at Caerphilly Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning.

  • Update Monday, September 22: Colin William Goulding, 30, of Bridge Street, Abertillery, was remanded in custody to appear before Newport Crown Court on Thursday September 27. The court was told that Goulding’s parents were working at the factory at the time of the fire.
