Two Caerphilly school girls have been putting their maths skills to the test in a global online competition and have come out on top.

Emma Vaughan, 15 and Rebecca Roberts, 12, both attend the Kip McGrath Education Centre in Caerphilly’s Castle Court Shopping Centre and have been using the company’s latest software to boost their maths.

Kip McGrath, which has centres around the world, has begun using a globally-linked computer game to help pupils improve their skills and pitting them against each other.

Both Emma and Rebecca have proven to be worthy opponents against other pupils at centres all over the world by being ranked number one in their respective games.

Emma said: “In the game we have to do a series of times tables, up to times 12, in a certain amount of time. I find it a lot easier to learn my times tables this way and when you know your times tables, it makes working things out a lot easier.”

Rebecca added: “It’s helped me a lot and has kept me a step ahead in what we’ve been doing in lessons.”

Rebecca’s mother Sarah has also noticed the game’s impact on her daughter’s maths.

She said: “Rebecca has come on in leaps and bounds since she started coming to Kip McGrath earlier this year. Her grades have improved but the one thing we’ve noticed is her confidence.

“It’s a fun way of learning and they don’t realise they are learning.”
